The challenges of today's dynamic time, as a general shortage of human resources due to demographic change, an international 'war for talents' caused by the globalization and the rapid technological progress, provide companies with the task of applying appropriate measures for qualified employees to win, motivate and retain. This Master's Thesis has its focus on the 1980-2000 born, the generation Y. The Austrian corporate landscape is dominated by family businesses and SMEs. The safeguarding of traditional values is seen as the primary strategic success factor. However, in literature is stated that this traditional corporate culture is not compatible with the value system of generation Y. Nevertheless, some traditional Austrian companies are seen by generation Y as the preferred employer. The analysis of how these companies design their HRM to bring in harmony the expectations of generation Y with the values of the long-standing tradition is the objective of this Master's Thesis. Through a qualitative empirical research in three successful traditional Austrian companies, research questions were answered. It became clear that the active living of tradition has great significance for the Austrian generation Y, because their need for community, security and stability is satisfied. Furthermore, the literarily compiled value system has been reconciled with the empirically collected characteristics and requirements and the validity for the Austrian generation Y could be confirmed. In the companies surveyed also an almost complete agreement regarding the anticipation of the expectations of generation Y as well as HR-measures used and valued by generation Y was found. In summary, it is noted that the combination of tradition and modernity leads the investigated companies to success.
