Fabrication of flexible optical waveguides by means of two-photon-induced thiol-ene polymerization

Abstract

The Zwei-Photonen-induzierte Polymerisation (2PP) ist eine neuartige Technik der Polymerchemie, die 3D-Lithographie mit Auflösungen unter 100 nm erlaubt. Neben Anwendungsfeldern wie der Biomedizin oder Mikrofluidik birgt 2PP viel Potential in der Photonik. Die vorliegende Dissertation befasst sich mit der Entwicklung von Polysiloxan/Photopolymer Hybridmaterialien, die für die 2PP-Fabrikation von flexiblen optischen Wellenleitern maßgeschneidert sind. Diese könnten in der Zukunft für optische Verbindungen in Leiterplatten eingesetzt werden. Während ältere Arbeiten auf diesem Gebiet aufwendige Vor- und Nachbereitung der Proben voraussetzen, werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit einfache, zeitsparende Wellenleiterfabrikationsprozesse vorgestellt.<br />Im ersten Materialkonzept wurden Wellenleiter durch 2PP in acrylat-basierte, photoreactive Formulierungen eingeschrieben, die auf einem Polysiloxanmatrixmaterial und einem hochbrechenden Triacrylat basieren. Eine stark ausgeprägte Anreicherung von hochbrechendem Material in den belichteten Volumina war in den flüssigen Medien möglich. Die Thixotropie verhinderte ein Absinken der fabrizierten Wellenleiter. Im letzten Schritt reichte eine einfache UV-Flutbelichtung der Proben aus, während in früheren Arbeiten überschüssige Monomere verdampft worden waren. In den anderen beiden Konzepten wurde eine siloxanbasierte photoreaktive Monomerformulierung mittels 2PP in gehärteten Polysiloxanen polymerisiert. Diese Proben wurden durch selektive Härtung der Polysiloxanmatrices in Gegenwart der Monomere mittels kationisch-ringöffnender Epoxypolymerisation bzw. Acetoxy Kondensation hergestellt. Der oben erwähnte Anreicherungseffekt fand auch bei diesen beiden Prozessen Anwendung.<br />Für alle Materialien wurden analytische Untersuchungen bezüglich Photoreaktivität, thermischer Stabilität, rheologischem Verhalten und optischer Dämpfung durchgeführt. Der Nachweis für erfolgreiche Lichtleitung konnte für Wellenleiter aller drei Materialien erbracht werden.<br />

The two-photon induced polymerization (2PP) is a novel, elegant concept in polymer chemistry allowing for real 3D lithography with resolutions down to several tens of nanometers. Beside fields of application such as biomedicine or microfluidics 2PP is likely to play an important role in photonics. This thesis is about development of polysiloxane/two-photon-polymer hybrid materials, which are specially tailored for 2PP-fabrication of flexible optical waveguides. These might be used in optical interconnects one day. This work suggests three simple, time-saving processes compared to other contributions in this field, where elaborate post- and pre-processing is required.<br />In the first material concept waveguides were inscribed via 2PP into acrylic photoreactive formulations based on a hydrophilic polysiloxane matrix material and a high refractive triacrylate. The thixotropy allowed for preventing the waveguides from sinking. The fact that the curing took place in a liquid medium enabled a very pronounced diffusion-based enrichment of high refractive material in the two-photon illuminated regions. For the last step, simple UV-flood-curing was sufficient compared to evaporation of high refractive monomers in former works. In the other two approaches photoreactive, siloxane-based thiol-ene monomer formulations were 2PP-cured inside cured silicone rubbers, which were formed via orthogonal cationic ring opening and acetoxy condensation curing in the presence of the monomers. The above mentioned enrichment effect was exploited in these concepts also. Analytical investigations regarding photoreactivity, thermal stability, rheological behaviour and optical damping were conducted. For all materials the proof of principle for the guiding of light was achieved.<br />
