Actively Q-switched lasers often have the problem of fluctuations in the output pulse energies. The present work shows how this problem can be solved by applying control-theoretic concepts. The stochastic influence of spontaneous emission on the output pulse energies is demonstrated by a tailored mathematical model. Furthermore, experimentally observed instabilities of the discrete-time population dynamics are reproduced by simulations and their reasons explained. Finally, possible control approaches are presented to suppress the unwanted stochastic and dynamic phenomena.
