Abstract:

This master thesis is dealing with the economic efficiency optimization of pump systems through variable speed drives and arose out of a cooperation of TU Wien, Andritz AG and SET Sustainable Energy Technologies GmbH. This work compares a conventional variable speed drive with a frequency converter (full power converter) and an electro-mechanical differential drive, which was developed by the SET Sustainable Energy Technologies GmbH. Firstly, an overview of the operating characteristics of pumps is given for the purpose of understanding and secondly various possibilities for power savings are shown. Furthermore the fundamentals of drive motor technologies are illustrated. The need for variable drive pumps is clarified by showing examples of pump systems provided by Andritz AG, followed by a technical description of the two competitive drive systems. Goal of this thesis is the pre-dimensioning of the electro-mechanical pump drive depending on the demanded speed variability as well as the required pump power. Finally a cost comparison of the pre-dimensioned differential system and a comparable full power converter system is implemented. Part of this work was to develop a tool on Microsoft Excel 2010 (file name: "Pumpantriebsanalyse") for the dynamic adaption for different operating conditions. On this basis Andritz AG can easily verify the most economic system for the relevant application. The function, the utilized calculating steps and hence the resulting outcomes of this tool are shown in this thesis.
