dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
Driven by industrialization, globally a progressive increase in material and energy demand can be observed, with far-reaching consequences for the entire ecosystem of the earth. This problem is supposed to be counteracted by decoupling economic growth from material resource consumption, which reflects the basic idea of circular economy. Despite increasing interest in the topic of circular economy from science, industry and politics, according to Wittpahl (2020), the introduction of circular manufacturing is a major challenge for industry which is faced within a short timeframe. Since the consensus on possible implementation strategies and methods is according to Lim et al. (2022) and Wittpahl (2020) still lacking, this thesis deals with the critical review of methods and approaches to introduce circular manufacturing (CM) at micro level with focus on manufacturing companies in the mechanical engineering sector. The aim of the work is to identify and critically examine currently used methods and approaches for the introduction of circular manufacturing. The examination of the literature was carried out with the help of an extensive systematic literature review on the topic of "circular manufacturing". The theoretical basis is provided by the work of Tranfield et al. (2003). Based on more than 500 publications resulting of the search input including the inclusion criteria, the iterative exclusion procedure identified a total of 47 CM methods and approaches that are currently represented in the mechanical engineering sector according to the current state of research. To organize the results a coding framework was developed. Given the inherent complexity of circular systems, finally, the multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) method is used to assess the circularity of the identified CM methods and approaches.
