dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
The paper at hand explores how the advent of mobile technologies like smartphones influence teaching and learning of basic programming techniques, in a classroom setting as well as in the processes of informal learning. To recognise and understand the views and requirements of teachers and students alike this paper utilises a set of interviews. Said interviews strive to document past experiences with the technologies and furthermore develop a set of experimental tests that show strengths and weaknesses as assessed by a group of expected endusers. Participating students were asked to recall past experiences and situations, and reflect upon the question of which tasks in a usual classroom setting would be easier or better taught with the help of modern technologies. In this questionnaire the diverse manner of teaching methods and practices was shown, and also how the attitude of a teacher to a certain technology projects upon the motivation of the interviewed pupils. This paper shows the realities of pupils in schools today and aims to document how ubiquitous the use of smartphones is in the everyday activities of young people. The confrontation between institutionalised learning, where smartphones are still new and quite problematic, and the informal learning scenarios of young people seems obvious. Education should thrive to re-include the realities outside of school-walls, to encompass all this intrinsic motivation to learn within their current curriculum. Most interviewed pupils aren't even aware of how much they use their smartphones for learning and exactly this self-motivated learning process is a state every institutionalised education system should set as a benchmark. From the point of view of a teacher this paper makes explicit what functionality is important and relevant in a classroom setting to teach the multifaceted competence of computer programming. This allows not only to develop a very targeted application but also makes implicit goals of a teaching strategy explicit. It gives insight in what competences are deemed important and what topics are within the core of informatics/computing today. Finally the theoretical part of this work is rounded out by a review of guidelines, to evaluate the given software project Pocket Code (former Catrobat) and develop ideas and formulate suggestions on how to make the application better suited for the needs of learners and teachers. Besides the theoretical Framework this paper offers practical insight in the most important smartphone application to learn programming skills today. The interviewees were asked to test the visual programming tool Pocket Code and evaluate it from their points of view. Developed in Austria, more precise from a team at the TU Graz, the smartphone application Pocket Code has the goal to port the benefits of visual programming to a mobile user interface, and received a number of prices like the Austrian National Innovation Award 2013 for this effort. To confront the software with actual user testing showed downsides and possibilities which are documented in the thesis at hand and finally collected in a framework to improve future versions of the application. Ultimately this thesis tries to show potential upgrades in the specific software project Pocket Code, but also develop generally applicable guidelines, which will assist in the development of future learning application for mobile interfaces.
