dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
Historic documents, which can be dated to antique and medieval times or to the modern era, form a significant part of our cultural heritage and are able to fascinate people even centuries and decades after they were produced. Therefore, their restoration and conservation is very important. The Vienna Genesis, which is preserved at the Austrian National Library (ÖNB), is a fragmentary version of the Old Testament Book of Genesis written in ancient greek. It is dated to the 6th century and was probably produced in modern-day Syria. Each of the 24 remaining sheets, which are executed on both sides, contains an illustration of the biblical scene, described in the text above. The severe corrosion of the silver ink has led to a massive damage of the parchment. This diploma thesis is part of the FWF-project „Vienna Genesis: Material Analysis and Conservation“ (P 28898) of the Institute for Conservation at the Austrian National Library (ÖNB), supported by the Conservation Science Department of the Kunsthistorische Museum Vienna (KHM). The central topics of the thesis were the analysis of the parchment, the silver ink and the miniature paintings. In the course of the diploma thesis, a study of the thermal deterioration of a series of parchment samples, which were prepared with a lichen dye (Roccella tinctoria) and 14 silver inks, was carried out. In order to determine the degree of deterioration of the reference samples, the hydrothermal stability of parchment fibres was analysed by accompanying analysis of the shrinkage temperature with the Micro Hot Table-method (MHT). The comparative analysis of the degree of deterioration of two fibre samples from the original codex showed good agreement with the results for the reference samples. The results of the analysis of the shrinkage temperature were complemented by the determination of the fibre morphologies of the fibre samples of the original and the artificially aged reference samples. The inorganic compounds as well as the binding medium of the silver ink of the Vienna Genesis were analysed with x-ray fluorescence analysis (µ-XRF) and pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), respectively. The results of the analysis with µ-XRF created a homogenous picture of the inorganic main, minor and trace components. A comparative analysis of the reference inks with µ-XRF made it possible to further study the composition of the original silver ink. In order to analyse the binding medium with Py-GC/MS, suitable conditions for the chromatographic separation and the spectroscopic detection had to be defined by the preliminary analysis of reference substances. The chosen conditions were then applied to the analysis of the reference inks and a sample of the silver ink of the Vienna Genesis, respectively. µ-XRF was additionally used to characterize the pigments, which were used for the miniature paintings. The results of the measurements provided an overview of the used materials and furthermore contributed to a proper assessment of the number of artists, who were involved in the production process of the illustrations of the Vienna Genesis.
