SURFING is the new trend sport in the 21st century. Surfers are travelling all over the world to search the shores for waves and ride them. Just as football started once small and unpopular, it seems nowadays that surfing is also designated for something more. In recent years a lot has been researched and developed. How is it possible to make surfing safer? How can people who live in a country without beaches be made familiar with the sport? Can surfing become an Olympic discipline? These and many other questions had to be answered in the last few years. Through the help of many experts, scientists, engineers and, of course, surfers the sport was presented to the public. Also the progress regarding social and technical terms has enormous. In the past 10 years, investors did not save any expenses and efforts too make it possible to surf 'man-made' wavepools and bring the sport to a new level. In my thesis I would like to focus on the architectural requirements of the sport. How is it possible to surf on the mainland? What features should the buildings around the artificial wavepools have? Can stadiums be built for surfing events? If so, last but not least, I will devote myself to the question of how to overcome the certainly enormous spans of a wavepool and which features and design the volume of the roof needs to have.
