The interest in SOFCs (solid oxide fuel cells) as an alternative for more polluting and less efficient power sources has been rapidly growing during the last decades. Their main attributes are highly efficient energy transformation, high power density and also fuel flexibility with working temperatures from 800 to 1000 °C. Negative consequences are decreased lifespan due to material wear and unwanted side reactions. One of the main reasons for the high operating temperatures is their influence on the oxygen reduction kinetics of cathode materials in SOFCs.
Thus it is one of the main goals to investigate cathode materials which provide efficient catalytic oxygen reduction and a fast ionic transport of oxygen ions to the electrolyte at intermediate temperatures. A material, partly exhibiting these properties is the commercially used strontium doped lanthanum manganese oxide (LSM), which provides stable working conditions over many thousands of operating hours. However, the mechanism of the oxygen reduction on LSM is not really well understood yet. This work tried to obtain novel information on the rate limiting step of the oxygen reduction on La1-xSrxMnO3+/-[delta] (LSM). LSM thin films (200 nm) were deposited on yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) as substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Those thin films were structured by photolithography which lead to dense highly defined micro-electrodes after etching. Influences of chemical and ion-beam etching were characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The measured impedances showed differences, probably due to changes in geometry on the edge of the electrodes, caused by ion-beam etching. Furthermore, to investigate the contributions of the electrode surface and triple phase boundary (TPB) to oxygen reduction, the TPB was coated with aluminum oxide to block it. Therefore it was tried to fabricate dense aluminum oxide layers by PLD via extensive variations of the deposition parameters. Impermeability was tested by 18O Tracer/TOF-SIMS experiments, but could not be achieved totally. The aluminum oxide layers were deposited on the LSM electrodes by PLD. After a subsequent micro-structuring process, micro-electrodes with aluminum oxide sealed TPB (Ø=350, 250, 150 µm) and free LSM areas at the surface (Ø=200, 100, 50 µm) were obtained. The measurements with EIS on a set-up with microscope and heating table showed bigger polarization resistances of the sealed electrodes, presumably caused by a cooling of the electrode surface area by the aluminum sealing. Polarization resistances measured on a set-up with heating from all sides indicated smaller ones in case of the sealed electrodes, probably due to the bigger volumina itself.
