dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
Results from large-scale wind models are commonly used to estimate wind energy potentials for certain regions if there are no detailled wind maps available. The accuracy of these wind models for medium- and small-scale applications can be increased using a geo- statistical model. A linear regression model in various versions shows small relations between the COSMO-EU wind model, detailled wind maps (for Austria and Spain) and geo-statistical parameters like orography and slope. Locations which are useful for wind harvesting because of their high average wind speed are weighted heavier in the selected regression. The identified relations are more clear when a bias correction is applied to compensate large-scale differences in the wind maps and if the mentioned weights are applied. Data preparation and processing was done with ArcGIS and the open-source statistics package R and can be repeated for other areas easily.
