dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
The topic of the thesis is the Hotel Valmartello al Pa- radiso del Cevedale located at the end of the valley of Martell, in South Tyrol. The building, planned by Gio Ponti, combines the facilities of a luxury hotel with the characteristics of a mountain shelter, and opens in 1937. The result is a long slender building ending in a convex curve. The Hotel Paradiso is divided in two categories, guests and tourists. The guest rooms are situated in the western wing, the east side of the building is reserved for the tourists. The subdivision is accentuated by the colored walls and the ceilings off the rooms. The tourist rooms are uni- colored, the guest rooms are patterned, with the result of individual designs. The short active lifetime of the hotel ends in 1946, when it declares bankruptcy. A businessman from Venice bought and extended it in 1952, without completing the construction works. Since then the building is abandoned. The thesis starts with an explanation of the work of Gio Ponti, followed by an introduction to the fascist hotel architecture and the projects by Gio Ponti related to tourism. This chapter is followed by a description of the location of the Hotel Paradiso, the design steps, the building from 1937 and the extension and the actual state. The thesis ends with the concept of revitalization.
