dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
This diploma thesis focusses on the historical and architectural reconstruction of the material ropeway which was built in the Tyrolean Valsertal between 1943 and 1945 in order to mine molybdenum. It was, however, not finished and was dismantled at the end of World War II. The paper at hand is based on various sources like files from archives, historical pictures and the structural remains which were measured and charted. Based on the extensive archive material the phase of planning as well as the phase of construction - which remained incomplete - could be understood and described. The first planning phases and the efforts to build a material ropeway between the alpine tunnel and the processing plant in Innervals came to nothing or were not suitable for the local conditions. Various modifications also did not result in any measurable success. Finally the planning of a suitable location route lead to the construction of the material ropeway. However, it remained unfinished because World War II ended and the interest to mine molybdenum was lost. Essential parts along the route were missing. The building of the bottom station was finished, but to what extent the construction and the assembling of the technical equipment had progressed remains unknown. The structures along the whole route had been built, but important parts respectively pieces of work were missing. Examples are the grouting of the foundations, the castors and the safety devices for the howling rope. According to the files, the carrying rope was on the supports and stretched. Whether the howling rope had ever been delivered or fitted, could not be found out. Still missing were all the small assembly installations and the vernier adjustments at the buildings and structures along the route. At the hilltop transition the running rails for the operating supplies as well as the castors for the howling rope were missing. In the building at the summit station there were no interior fittings and the front porch/projection of the station building was incomplete. Based on the photo material and the architectural remains the material ropeway was reconstructed and illustrated in a 3D model. This model construction comprises the processing plant, the hilltop transition, the summit station and all the foundations and appropriate supports. From this virtual model an animation was created which simulates a flight of the former material ropeway from the bottom station to the summit station. Moreover, it is possible to see the actual state of construction before the dismantling of the material ropeway as well as a reconstruction of the probably planned finished state. This paper comprises a complete historical analysis of both the planning and the construction phase as well as the best possible reconstruction of the material ropeway in Innervals.
