dc.description.abstract
The thesis (diploma) examines the construction history of Palais Schwarzenberg, formerly Palais Mansfeld-Fondi, from its beginnings in 1697 until today. In part, the research was accomplished through extensive research in the central archive of the Schwarzenbergs in Krumau, which was opened recently to the public. Thus, the development of the Palais, which is closely associated with the names of Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt and Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, is detailed with the help of original plans and documents. Research in the archive also permited an attempt at dating hitherto unknown construction periods and identifying the respective builders, for example, Anton Erhard Martinelli und Ignaz Ram.
Because of construction activities in the first half of the 20th century and severe damage suffered in the last days of World War II, parts of the building underwent significant alterations. These changes to the building structure are identified and documented as important aspects of the Palais's architectural history. Planned by Jean Trehet and artistically enhanced by Lorenzo Mattielli, the artistically designed spacious gardens are also surveyed. Included in the researach is also Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach's fire machine that powered the water fountains in the gardens.
Thus, the thesis aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the genesis and the development of the entire Baroque site, including the gardens and garden structures, and as a concrete research outcome to create a plan of the history of the site's physical structures and gardens.
