My thesis examines one of the best preserved monuments in the Balkans, the Fortress of Niš. The decision to choose this subject originated in the emotional attachment to this place in my home country of Serbia. Niš, the third largest city in southern Serbia, dates back to the 2nd century. It has over time developed into an attractive tourist destination offering a wide range of different activities. The Niš fortress, built on Roman and medieval foundations, lies on the right bank of the river Nišava. It is one of the most important urban buildings and simultaneously a fascinating cultural heritage at the same time, which the World Heritage title should be awarded by UNESCO. Many parts of the fortress have limited access. These are now to be revived to make the city more attractive to visitors and residents of the City of Niš. The fortress offers great potential for this with its numerous monuments, archaeological sites and archaeological objects. This thesis offers the analysis of the edifice, a comprehensive research, documentation and peculiarities. On the basis of historical research and changes, I will create interventions within the existing state in which I design a visitor centre. I am also keen to promote the dynamics of this place of tourist and cultural importance. The focus of the planning is the demanding implementation of the building, which is located in a historically sensitive part of the city. My research is based on the integration of the new in what already exists.
