Due to the increasing number of elderly people in our society and their wish to live independently at their homes as long as possible, the need for care attendants is drastically increasing. The foreseeable demand can only be satisfied by the development of personal service robots, who assist elderly people at everyday tasks. At the moment several barriers prevent robotic assistants from resolving this problem in the field of elderly care. Besides the need for more elaborate sensors and actuators, important barriers are the current prices for mobile service robots and their necessary flexibility. Blue Danube Robotics GmbH aims to eliminate these barriers and develop a service robot helping elderly and handicapped people to live their lives at home. For the optimal use of the robot at home, an omnidirectional robot base is essential. The design of the omnidirectional mobile base presented is based on the analysis of typical challenges arising from the robots environment. From this analysis and several design limitations a list of requirements was derived, ensuring the necessary flexibility of the robot in its environment. Based on this list the mobile base was designed and prototyped. According to the developed design four drive modules, each consisting of two hydraulic rotary actuators and one hydraulic cylinder, enable the mobile platform to move the robot through the apartment. Due to the implementation of hydraulic cylinders the base design is capable of overcoming thresholds and single steps (up to 210 mm ). The components of the supporting structure are designed to be assembled using wood connections. According to the design the surfaces are covered with a soft tactile material to detect collisions and at the same time to reduce the risk of injury. Not all aspects of the design could be realized in the final prototype due to time limitations and manufacturing problems. A strategy to overcome single steps was developed and presented. The first prototype of the omnidirectional robot base is capable of climbing thresholds up to 20 mm and to drive on ramps. Due to its dimensions the base provides flexibility and can be used as an aid for standing up. The support structure uses eco-friendly material and allows easy maintenance. The mobile platform presented is capable of moving Blue Danube Robotics future robot through houses and apartments, bringing the robot one step closer to realization.
