dc.description.abstract
The Wienerwald is situated at the eastern foothills of the Alps, and, as relatively large, coherent woodland in the immediate vicinity of the major city of Vienna, unique across Europe. Since centuries it has been used as a habitat by the population and therefore exhibits countless cultivated meadows and willows with rich biodiversity, besides its large broad-leaved forests. Viniculture has also been a long time tradition in the Wienerwald.
Over the past 200 years deforestations have threatened the Wienerwald time and again, while settlement pressure increased steadily. With provisions of conservation, both Vienna and Lower Austria have started to offer the Wienerwald its necessary protection. For this reason there are a multitude of different conservation area categories in existence today. Furthermore regional planning has also established goals and programs for future developments of the region. Regulations on European and international levels are of importance in the Wienerwald as well.
The idea of identifying the Wienerwald as "Biosphärenpark" (biosphere reserve), which arose in 2002, pursues the goal of also protecting and preserving woodlands and valuable cultivated areas for generations to come.
Biosphere reserves are UNESCO recognized areas, which act as exemplary regions for sustainable development, and therefore observe, explore, and live economical as well as ecological and social aspects of sustainability. They serve the conservation of the biological and cultural diversity, develop models for agriculture, and conduct research and environmental observation, as well as education and training. The organization into three zones - core, care, and development - is adapted to the different goals in the respective territories. Since 1995 interaction of people with nature has been the focus of the so-called "Seville Strategy".
Following an extensive analysis of the projects carried out in the Wienerwald so far, the concept of a biosphere reserve has been discovered to be an appropriate instrument, which has been successfully implemented, especially over the last three years. The ecological component of sustainability has been strongly pushed. Projects in the domain of sustainable regional economy were also initiated. Aspects of social sustainability are to be dealt with more strongly in the future.
Despite far-reaching public relations efforts the biosphere reserve Wienerwald is still largely unknown to the general public. Getting through to 750 000 residents represents a big challenge for the future.
Inclusion and contribution of the general public is a fundamental requirement in the concept of a biosphere reserve.
