Abstract:
The topic of the project is the design of an energetically optimized nursing home for the elderly in Haslach an der Mühl, a small city in the "Mühlviertel" in Upper Austria. In the theoretic part of the work a short introduction is followed by an analysis of forms of living for the elderly and a presentation of current issues in the design of nursing homes (including a historical overview). Everyday life in such a building is being described as well as special demands for people suffering from dementia. After a presentation of the town of Haslach an der Mühl the basic principles for the design of passive-houses are being discussed. Calculations carried out on the project show how the designed building achieves passive-house-standard in terms of heating needs and that overheating in summer is being avoided.
A presentation of the project itself follows -up. Basic parameters for the design were the living-groups-concept, a circulation which offers "shortest connections" as well as loop roads for promenading and strolling as well as the energetic optimization. The design of various common areas with different spatial qualities and social intensities are being examined as well as the topic of "thresholds" for the private living-units. Besides architecture and the energetic matter a focus was put on the design of the outside garden -space as a fundamental part of homes for the elderly. An elaboration on the technical aspects of the design completes the paper.
