Halanek, R. (2011).
Because of the life span of hydro power plants, the revitalization of its components is an important tool to extend lifetime. This is all the more important, as the building of new power plants is met with more and more opposition. To this end it is necessary to determine the technical condition of the individual power plant components and compare maintenance costs with the costs of a new acquisition for an economically appropriate decision. Traditionally, these tasks of assessing the technical condition and cost-efficiency are accomplished by using parameter studies and specially developed valuation systems. Although there are existing evaluation systems from well-known consultants and suppliers of components, these are usually only accessible within the company. For univerity use a more advanced condition assessment process called REVEX has been around for years, which deals with this issue. But being a standalone application, it is available for a small circle of users only.
The here arising research question is: "How can existing schemata be provided to experts for the assessment of the condition of hydropower plants in a simple way, and at the same time ensuring their input data flow into a self learning system?".
In order to answer this question, all existing schemata were listed following a literature search. A subsequent analysis revealed which schemata would be implemented and how they can be prepared for future add-ons. Requirements were derived by comparison of existing solutions, in this case with the software REVEX.
A web-based standards-compliant computer program was created. It is based on analyses and assessments of hydro power plants that have been carried out previously, and it simplifies the entering and analyzing of data significantly. The user enters some data and gets an overview of the technical condition of the indicated hydro power plant. On the basis of this evaluation scheme and by using cost functions, the ideal time for revitalization is calculated and presented to the user. For further use of the results conventional export formats like PDF and Excel tables are provided.
System administrator privileges include the management of components as well as the creation of new components and assign them with cost functions. Furthermore, the system is flexible enough to incorporate new components and specially tailored evaluation schemata into the existing structure. Therefore, it is possible to detect the current condition of a specific plant, and at the same time the methodology is readily applicable to other systems.
Also the possibility of data retrieval has been created. This way, cost functions that have been overwritten can be used to improve the underlying models.
