Der österreichische Kataster gibt für jedes Grundstück das Flächenausmaß an. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, die Genauigkeit dieser Flächenangaben zu untersuchen und dadurch folgende Hypothese zu bestätigen: "Die Angabe des Flächenausmaßes in ganzen Quadratmetern ist nicht sinnvoll, da diese Genauigkeit nicht garantiert werden kann." Der erste Teil der Arbeit befasst sich mit der historischen Entwicklung des Katasters und dem aktuellen System der Grundstücksdatenbank. In der Grundstücksdatenbank existieren teilweise heute noch Flächenangaben, die aus der Zeit der Urvermessung (1817-1865) stammen. Anhand einer Untersuchung der historischen Verfahren zur Flächenbestimmung und der dafür geltenden Fehlergrenzen kann die Hypothese der Arbeit bestätigt werden. Weiters werden die derzeit verwendeten Verfahren zur Flächenermittlung vorgestellt und deren Genauigkeit durch Anwendung des Fehlerfortpflanzungsgesetzes untersucht. Auch hier kann die Feststellung getroffen werden, dass eine Genauigkeit der Flächen in der Größenordnung eines Quadratmeters im Allgemeinen nicht erreicht werden kann. Eine weiterer Schwerpunkt der Arbeit bildet die rechtliche Bedeutung der Flächenangaben des Katasters. Es werden die rechtlichen Bestimmungen für die Flächenermittlung sowie die betroffenen Rechtsgebiete (Jagdrecht, Baurecht, Forstrecht, Steuerrecht, usw.) angeführt und die Judikatur zu den Flächenangaben des Katasters erläutert. Der letzte Teil befasst sich schließlich mit der wirtschaftlichen Bedeutung der Flächenangaben auf den Nutzer, die anhand der Immobilienbewertung, der Besteuerung (Einheitswert) und der Agrarförderung untersucht wird. Es hat sich gezeigt, dass der Nutzer die Flächenangaben zumeist für die Berechnung von wirtschaftlichen Kenngrößen verwendet (z.B. Wert eines Grundstückes aufgrund eines ortsüblichen Quadratmeter-Preises). In diese Berechnung gehen jedoch auch andere fehlerbehaftete Faktoren ein, die das Ergebnis i.d.R. mehr beeinflussen als der Flächenfehler. Deshalb konnte die Hypothese der Arbeit folgendermaßen erweitert werden:<br />"Die Angabe des Flächenausmaßes in ganzen Quadratmetern ist nicht sinnvoll, da diese Genauigkeit nicht garantiert werden kann und vom Nutzer auch nicht benötigt wird." Den Abschluss der Arbeit bildet eine Diskussion der Ergebnisse und eine Gegen�berstellung der Vor- und Nachteile von aus der Digitalen Katastralmappe automatisch generierten Flächenangaben.<br />
