Pressure pipes for waste water transport favour the formation of hydrogen sulphide, which depends mainly on wastewater composition, temperature, retention time and absence of oxygen and nitrate. This process is performed by sulphate-reducing bacteria, which are embedded, together with other micro organisms, in the biofilm at the inner surface of the pipes. Hydrogen sulphide diffuses easily into the atmosphere and can then lead to several problems such as odour nuisance, endangerment for the humans and corrosion problems. To combat hydrogen sulphide, mechanical methods (pigging, use of compressed air) as well as chemical methods (iron salts, nitrate salts and lime) were examined in different already existing pressure pipes under different operating conditions, also regarding their application technology and the economy with consideration of the necessary operating costs. In existing pipes the treatment with chemicals is recommended, which can be easily re-fitted. The conventional pigging is, due to its short effect and high costs, only partly applicable, but can be replaced by a more economical version with expanded clay in combination with chemical methods. With the implementation of new pressure pipes the economy of the installation of compressed air transport (pneumatic transport) for wastewater or an air injection should be tested. The use of compressed air is especially recommended in cases where wastewater with a high sulphide formation potential has to be transported in pipes with a small diameter Results of investigations on hydrogen sulphide production were compared with various computation models from the literature. Operational data of sulphide in pressure pipes are in relatively good accordance with the models from Boon and Lister (1975) and/or Hadjianghelou (1984) and were used for the prediction of chemical dosing under Austrian conditions. Since the prediction of sulphide formation with the existing models often strongly deviated from practically obtained values, it was possible to develop a model based on the data of the examined pressure pipes suitable for Austria.
