Ziel der Arbeit war es aufzuzeigen, mit welchen Mitteln der, nach heutiger Sicht, mangelhaft gebaute Gebäudebestand Österreichs (vor allem zwischen 1945 und 1980) saniert werden kann und welche Auswirkungen diese Sanierungen auf den CO2 - Ausstoß haben. Vorab wurde untersucht wie viel Energie in welchen Bereichen (Beleuchtung, Verkehr, Beheizung, etc.) verbraucht wird um dann konkret den Energieverbrauch und die damit verbundenen CO2 Emissionen des Gebäudebestandes Österreichs zu untersuchen. Eine Übersicht über die gängigsten Dämmstoffe, über deren Erzeugung, Anwendung und Wiederverwertbarkeit, den einzelnen Dämmwerten und den Energieverbrauch bei deren Erzeugung geben weitere Information. Erklärt wird nun die Sanierung einer Fassade unter Anwendung von Platten aus Expandierbarem Polystyrol (EPS) und unter Zuhilfenahme der THEWOSAN Förderung in Wien. Eine Erläuterung des neu eingeführten Energieausweises rundet das Bild vor dem Praxisbeispiel aus Wien ab. Das Praxisbeispiel aus Wien bestätigt die These, dass eine nachträglich aufgebrachte Wärmedämmung und Sanierung des Gebäudes nicht nur eine wesentliche Reduktion der Heizkosten mit sich bringt sondern auch den Wert der Liegenschaft erheblich steigert. Diese Wertsteigerung wird anhand einer Verkehrswertberechnung und vergleichen vor und nach der Sanierung dokumentiert.
