dc.description.abstract
Bearings are an essential part of engine construction. To achieve lubrication on the inside of copper and aluminium alloy cylinders, magnetron sputtering is normally used. However, this method cannot be applied to cylinders with a diameter lower than 70 mm. A promising new method is triode sputtering, which allows the coating of smaller gauges. For this thesis, the application of this technique to cylinders of 30,5 mm was tested. The results are convincing: triode sputtering is a reliable and simple method to achieve the stated goal. The discharge was typified with all its parameters and basic relations between key indicators were assessed. Additionally, several sample coatings were performed. Rates of up to 1.4 µm/min were achieved, thus easily performing on par with magnetron sputtering. Further research and optimization will eventually lead to an increase of the deposit rate. This thesis is the base of further developments in the field of triode sputter deposition.
