dc.description.abstract
dc.description.abstract
In this thesis the design for a 440m long bridge is presented.
For its location a crossing across the river Drau near the village of Lippitzbach in Carinthia/ Austria was chosen. The draft was designed particularly with regard to the "Balanced Lift Method" ("BLM"), which is an innovative, already patented, construction technique that is currently being developed at the Institute for Structural Engineering at the head of Prof. Dr. Kollegger. A brief recapitulation on the technological principles of this process can be found in the third chapter. In the present draft it was possible to successfully transfer the "BLM" to composite construction, which opens up an extended area of application. Since bridge constructions are essential parts of public infrastructure, usually mirroring regional building culture, adequate design is important and required. This aspect is of particular importance when it comes to monumental, partly long-lasting infrastructure projects, which sometimes are dominating the landscape of an entire region.
On this account, a master thesis for architects was tendered by the Institute for Structural Engineering, in which the creative possibilities of the new "BML" should be shown and presented on the basis of a particular design proposal. Chapter 4 as well as the plans in attachment B deal with this design proposal and show studies concerning possible alternatives, evaluation and verification of feasibility.
Before starting with the actual design work, the issue of bridges was examined closely. Chapter 1 offers an analysis of the various functions of a bridge and describes their impacts. Moreover, the important defining parameters of the abstract are also presented and described.
Based on the analysis of these parameters, explanations concerning the conceptual draft as well as their improvements with the help of various tools used for the design of bridges follow.
Practical experiences as well as study projects of the author put a finishing touch to the theoretical part of this thesis.
