Rud, H. (2008).

The operation behaviour of cleanable filter media regarding the filtration efficiency, the dust storage behaviour and the residual pressure loss is influenced by a variety of parameters. In recent research work the influences of fibre charge status and fibre cross sectional form on the filtration behaviour of Polyimide needle felts were investigated. For needle felts consisting of charged fibre material no relevant change in the residual pressure loss, but a reduction of the mean clean gas concentration of the charged filter samples were found. The improved separation efficiency is a consequence of non neutralised fibre charges in the depth of a charged filter medium. This fibre layer acts thereby as an electrostatic enhanced deep bed filter. Due to the production process Polyimide fibres has a variety of multi-lobed (multilobal) fibre cross sections. In comparison to conventional round shaped fibres, larger zones with low fluid velocity exist in the flow field around multilobal Polyimide fibres. Dust can separate in these zones with low effect on the pressure loss across the filter media consisting of multilobal fibres. The investigations show that the use of slight charged multilobal Polyimide fibres can enhance the filtration behaviour of cleanable filter media regarding the filtration efficiency, the dust storage behaviour and finally the residual pressure loss.
