Abstract:
In the last years new possibilities of connecting wood and glass have arisen due to the further development of adhesives and the resultant high quality of this joining technology. The trend has moved on from the simple in-site-gluing to high quality in-plant-gluing. One has been able to observe this trend for quite a while, for example, in the bonding of glass panes in wooden-framed windows.
In the past, high-quality, homogenous adhesives were thought to have little statically strengths. Thus, adhesives in glass constructions were mainly used for the load transmission of the weight of the glass or the wind impact. On the contrary, it can now be seen that this joining technology shows much more potential, as already proved in numerous, previous publications.
This paper is based on a preceding project which showed in first-cut experiments that the use of wood-glass-compounds to stiffen wooden frame-houses makes sense. In this publication we will emphasize the actual realization and dimensioning of such wood-glass-compounds. The experimental part of this paper deals with the glue connection itself by investigating two different glue types. The load direction, load duration and geometry of the gluing joint are investigated, as well as the consequences of environmental influences on the load bearing behavior of glued wood-glass-connections. Furthermore, the development of a functional façade-system in building physics is done, based on the prototype structural system already developed in the preceding project. For this one investigated several aspects as, for instance resistance to air flow, driving rain, wind load and climate differences. An optimization of production and assembling technology is done.
The static resistance of numerous large specimens is investigated via fracture test, showing local and global deformations in the system under stress, as well as the type of collapse. Two models (analytic und numerical) are calculated and compared in the theoretical part of the paper to predict the load bearing capacity and the deformation of wood-glass-compounds. A concept for the dimensioning is elaborated using the data collected in the experimental part of the paper.
The design concept is applied to the geometry of a typical single-family house, and the use of wood-glass-compounds to bear loads out of the building is evaluated.
The conclusions gathered are then applied to real prototype buildings.
They are the basis for serial production of wood-glass-compounds, offering the possibility for long-term monitoring.
