In the course of this studys the moisture behavior of flat wooden roofs is analysed. Simulations and experimental investigations under varying influencing factors are conducted. Also new scientific methods, which can be used to quickly find the suitable roof construc-tion in the design phase, are developed.
In the first part of this work, ten different full scale flat wooden roofs (membrane roofs, green roofs and sheet metal roofs) are studied.
The field experiments are carried out under sun exposed and with six roofs additionally under fulltime shaded conditions. The measured values determine the key factors of the moisture behavior of the roof construc-tions. The measurements show that:
I. shading negatively impacts the moisture behavior of the roofs II. a green roof shows similar behavior to fully shaded conditions III. sheet metal roofs manage moisture best of all roof types IV. the inclusion of a smart vapor retarder (SVR) is able to achieve more distinct drying behavior compared to a PE-foil with sd >100 m V. a SVR with a large variation of the sd-value is more advantageous than a SVR with a lower variation VI. the use of OSB as inner sheeting can result in higher humidity in the cavity than a MDF which is more vapour permeable VII. the air tightness of OSB is lower than that of a vapor retarder membrane.
VIII. free convection occurs in the cavities.
In the second part of the work, a statistical approach is presented to consider air exfiltra-tion into the roofs. In addition to workmanship, the manufacturing condition of the roof is considered. It is shown that the air tightness of the roof could have a decisive impact on the usability of the roof construction. A method is also derived by which specific shading conditions on the flat roof can be taken into account without the need for additional shading simulations. The suitability of the roof can be rated quickly using a diagramm with the maximum shading durations. The proposed method is verified by a sensitivity analysis.
Finally, using a decision tree shows how the important factors in planning a hygrically robust flat wooden roof can be considered in a simple way.
