Abstract:

This thesis looks at the history and future of the Buchmüller Haus in the centre of the village of Adnet near Hallein, Austria. Located next to the entrance to the cemetery surrounding the church, it used to serve as a farmstead for a long time and was known as the Bartlinklgut. The structure was built in the typical manner of the area and came into the possession of the Buchmüller family at the end of the 1940s. Benefitting from the central location in the village, the Buchmüller family transformed it into the Kirchenwirt, a restaurant and guest house. In the early 2000s, the central ballroom of the restaurant, that had replaced the former stables, was turned into a grocery store. Today, the house is owned by the municipality and the former ballroom is vacant. This thesis aims at looking at the history of the house from a wider perspective. Thereby, it will explore the close connection between landscape, village and structure as well as changes brought by agricultural mechanisation over time. These insights will then be applied to suggest a further transformation of the former farmstead in order to reintegrate it into the evolved village.
