The present paper addresses a design proposal for the modernisation and extension of the Henry-Dunant Elementary School in the 21st District of Vienna (AT), Floridsdorf. The intended result of the design proposal is to create an alternative approach to the existing structure. An analysis of the 55 year old building considers the fields of pedagogy, urban planning, architecture and ecology. In the course of this work the existing structure is analysed through literature references, surveys, interviews and an inventory and is further examined for deficits and defects. The key agents of the building are inspected, both by the means of their accounts and the inventory to best interpret the wishes of the main user groups for the final design. The recyclability of the existing building material and its reuse in the design plays a crucial role for the modernisation project. The CO2 emissions of the undertaken interventions, material manufacturing as well as decomposition are forming the material choice for the proposition. In addition to the ecology balance, the design attempts to meet the energy efficiency requirements for the building of the future, both in the spirit of comfort and automation as well as the resource efficiency regarding the internal substance flows. The Henry-Dunant Elementary School thus obtains constructional and creative solutions, in order to match a future-proof school building, adapted as much as possible to the climate change and exploit its current potential to the fullest for the future.
