Solid oxide fuel cells promise to be a very efficient means for producing electricity from a combustion reaction. While today this new technology may still sound exotic, several companies worldwide already offer a variety of different SOFC systems. In the next years solid oxide fuel cells might prove to be a key technology for a highly efficient and decentralized electrical energy system. The cathode, the place of oxygen reduction is often responsible for a substantial part of the total polarisation resistance. For this reason cathode materials are subject to scientific research around the world.
Two different pathways are followed. On one side there is a lot of interest in new cathode materials, while other groups concentrate on the better understanding and improvement of existing materials. This work follows the second pathway by investigating dense La0,6Sr0,4CoO3-[delta] electrodes. Cathodes of our group[1] show very fast oxygen reduction kinetics, respectively very low polarization resistances, but long term stability is an issue. This work focuses on the investigation of changes in composition of the electrodes during degradation. ToF-SIMS was the method of choice for these measurements, supplemented by other surface analysis methods such as LEIS and XPS. Another part of this work investigates the effect of electrochemical activation[2] for La0,6Sr0,4CoO3-[delta] electrodes. 18O exchange experiments were performed to provide more information on composition and activity of the electrode material. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was the method used to quantify the electrochemical performance and thus to establish structure-property relations.
Among others a clear correlation between the segregation of strontium to the surface and oxygen-reduction-kinetics of the LSC-electrodes was found. Strontium enrichment at the surface is observed in all LSC-films and could be confirmed by SIMS, LEIS und XPS. The amount of strontium enrichment is a qualitative measure for the electrode polarization resistance: The more strontium enrichment, the higher the polarization.
