Der Großteil der Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der mathematischen Theorie der Fraktale. Dabei werden Begriffe wie Selbstähnlichkeit, iterierte Funktionensysteme oder die Hausdorff-Metrik eingeführt. Ein umfassendes Kapitel widmet sich fraktalen Dimensionen, wobei die Vor- und Nachteile sowie der Zusammenhang der Box- und Hausdorff-Dimension behandelt werden. Ein kurzer medizinischer Teil beschäftigt sich mit Tumoren. Der letzte Teil der Arbeit stellt den Anwendungsteil dar. Dabei werden Tumorzellen aus Dünnschnitten von Mammakarzinomen bezüglich ihrer empirischen Box-Dimension untersucht. Es zeigt sich eine Tendenz, dass die Box-Dimension der Zellkerne mit dem Malignitätsgrad der pathologischen Gewebe steigt, aber auch, dass die Qualität, des mittels Lichtmikroskop aufgenommenen Datenmaterials, für eine seriöse Auswertung nicht ausreichend ist.
