This master thesis contributes to the analysis of the deformation characteristics of rockfill dams due to their increase in height. Interferences in existing dams are always a certain risk, particularly when additional load is applied. In the case of the Bockhartseedam the extension with a back-filled cantilever wall resulted in big unexpected settlements. The aim of this work is to analyse the deformation characteristics of the dam to draw conclusions regarding the cause of the settlements. The first part gives an overview of the characteristic behaviour of rockfill and the standard of knowledge.
Furthermore methods to estimate the parameters for rockfill material are provided. In the second part this work analyses the deformation behaviour of the Bockhartseedam with the Finite Element method, using the hardening soil model. The calculation results are showing a large consistency with the measured deformation, so that it was possible to draw conclusions about the cause of the settlements.
