Geographical location and climate, appearance of the islands, their raw materials and influences of the environment characterize the dwellings erected. Despite the general belief that the traditional Greek dwelling hasn't changed a lot from ancient times until now, there is plenty of evidence that disprove this assumption. Particularly the known atrium house of the ancient world is unrepresented. As a matter of course the same know-how under the same surrounding conditions, as is the case of the primitive houses, shows similar basic structures.
Furthermore we cannot deduce a direct delivery from the ancient world because this would apply to other countries with the same circumstances.
On Santorini the construction of the houses are decisively influenced by the volcanic soil material and the seismic activities. The historical development that differs from island to island leaves strong marks on the population and consequently their dwellings too. Despite the extreme refusal of the Turkish rulers you can particularly find many stylistic elements from the Ottoman world on Crete and Rhodes. Parts of the furniture even have oriental roots. But also Italian influences like the Renaissance and Neo-Classic characterize the three islands. They can particularly be seen on the façade, often they can be observed in the furniture too.
Also the urban organization is strongly connected with the historical development. Some street structures are preserved from the ancient world, others from the medieval or later epochs. Wars, pirates and immigrants influence the shape of the settlement and private space too.
Most of the time the villages grew slowly and so have an organic arrangement that fits the surrounding area. The houses can roughly be divided by means of the shape of the floor plans of the one-roomed basic-types to broad- and small fronted, while the first were preferred because the organization of the interior was more advantageous. When the localization didn't allow anything else or inside the defensive rings the small fronted type was used. As in later times conditions improved, the basic types were expanded or from the outset were provided further rooms. Sometimes the buildings were also built two- or even three storied. Also the span widths of the roofs were enlarged with the insertion of beams and pillars or in later times also with arches, therefore larger rooms were created. The shape of the roofs of all of the houses can be flat, sloping or vaulted, walls plastered or unrendered. Additionally to the simple farmhouse mansions were also built, in local, Neo-Classical or Balkan tradition. But there also exist special forms like primitive local huts in form of vaults or subterranean dwellings. In the last years more and more of these traditional houses have vanished and are replaced by optical and climatic more disadvantageous buildings made of reinforced concrete.
