Abstract:
The historic "Schlüsselhof" is seated in the middle of a cosy single-family-housing neighbourhood in Steyr (Austria). The estate was built in the middle ages at a beautiful riverside. Unfortunately nowadays it is close to demolition even though the historical building is under preservation order. There is a lack of revitalization concepts and money for their realization. The city of Steyr made investigations of possible future uses. Still there are no decisions taken about the future of "Schlüsselhof".
The project "living in generations" is the revitalization of the historic yard-house and the design of an integrated housing estate.
The idea of combining old with new is the central thread of the project.
On the one hand in the combination of historic building substance with new architecture in the traditional form of the atrium, on the other hand my living concept is based on the model of a village-structure with a functioning interaction of people of different social classes and different ages.
The two story building is kept low to integrate better into the neighbourhood with its low single-family houses. Only on one spot the new building is connected to the old "Schlüsselhof". The new and the existing building build a variety of outdoor spaces with different degrees of privacy according to their use.
The historic "Schlüsselhof" becomes a landmark and the surrounding neighbourhood named after the "Schlüsselhof" regains its identity.
The integrated housing estate contains a dormitory, assisted flats and a wellness area and administration office. The historic ensemble houses a day care centre for elder people, canteen, assembly hall, café and study room.
The mixture of different groups of users and inhabitants is important for the functioning of the idea.
Of course the estate is designed barrierfree and can be adapted for either of the groups of inhabitants.
