dc.description.abstract
Vacuum Isolation Panels are high performance insulating elements with a thermal conductivity 5 to 10 times lower than those of conventional insulating materials. Therefore the use of Vacuum Isolation Panels can significantly reduce the necessary thickness of thermal insulation.
The first part of this master thesis deals with the principals of Vacuum Isolation Panels. Besides the construction and the production of the panels, the physical basics of the thermal performance are described, as well as the aging mechanism, the thermal bridge effect of the edges and the workability.
In the second part the use of Vacuum Isolation Panels as external heat insulation for solid walls of masonry or concrete is analyzed. After a description of suitable mechanical fixing systems, the U-values of selected wall constructions under consideration of the thermal bridge effects of the fixing systems are calculated by using the Finite Element Method. The third part of this master thesis deals with the use of Vacuum Isolation Panels as insulation elements for thermal bridges in the renovation. With an example of a reveal with various mounting positions of the window and different thermal insulations of the wall, the thermal conductance of this thermal bridge is calculated without reveal insulation, with a reveal insulation of conventional insulating material and with a reveal insulation of Vacuum Isolation Panels.
