As an alternative solution to roller bearings and journal bearings an active magnetic bearing (AMB) has a number of advantages.
The main advantages are the contactless force-generation, no mechanical friction, the absence of oil and the adjustable stiffness and damping parameters while operating to adjust to changing conditions. One of the main drawbacks of active magnetic bearings is the not always sufficient reliability, which is decreased by a multitude of electronic elements.
During the FWF-research project "Ein anspruchsvolles Konzept für höchste AMB Zuverlässigkteit" a highly reliable active magnetic bearing has been developed at the Department of Mechanics and Mechatronics at the Vienna University of Technology by Dr.techn. Alexander Schulz. It features fully decoupled electromagnet-channels with exchangable electromagnets, local distance sensors and so-called Hot Swap Controller Amplifier modules (HCA-modules). Each HCA consist of a controller, power amplifier and a local error detection. If there occurs an error while operating, the concerning EM-channel is switched off. All the components of each magnet-module can be exchanged while operating without affecting the functioning of the active magnetic bearing. Thus the reliability and durability can be increased extensive.
The aim of this diploma thesis is to bring this high-reliable magnetic bearing into service. All missing and unknown components were measured and a monitoring software was programmed using LabVIEW.
Based on the preparatory work by Klaus Bergkirchner a test rig for measuring the magnetic force of electromagnets was completed and extended. The behavior of the magnetic material was measured and built into a MATLAB simulation of the AMB.
Furthermore the distance sensors were calibrated and the control of the magnetic bearing was adjusted to them. Finally all components were assembled and tested to find a fully working magnetic bearing for further investigations at the end of this diploma thesis.
