The school, the school system as a whole, is a social issue which concerns every Austrian. Everyone has had experience in school and can tell anecdotes from his school days. The politicians in all levels of the Austrian state require almost every year a great educational reform.
In my thesis I try to issue school construction and in particular the flexibility in school building on the example of the high school in Völkermarkt.
The first three chapters deal with the current state of the Austrian school construction debate and its historical development. What laws and structural reforms determined the Austrian history of education. The development of school buildings was of course strongly influenced by social progresses. How was the development of school buildings and how are the current school buildings classified in the historical context? But not only the students are changing, but also the relationship between students and teachers and their learning environment. From the discipline area to the learning landscape, it seems still a long way off to go. Friedrich Achleitner described the school in Völkermarkt as a radical attempt to develop a building as a spatial variable and flexible device.
What influences worked on the design of O. Uhl and H. Thurner during the end of the 1960ies? In chapter four I try to present the different approaches of that time. The structural openness of the design in 1974 allowed a number of modifications in the school, which did not result in significant improvements. The search in the archives of Ottokar Uhl, which is managed by AZW, brought some interesting aspects of the preliminary planning which are described in chapter five. My design in the last chapter finally shows possible alternatives to the existing building and how to deal with the issue of flexibility. On the one hand, three stock-oriented designs to be more open in the school building. On the other hand, a completely open floor plan without walls and doors that can be shared only by textiles into zones.
