Mitterbauer, G. (2007).
The objective of the project is the development of a measuring facility in pilot plant scale for the determination of the calorific value of heterogeneous materials in a range from 4.000 to 10.000 kJ/kg.
In the presented work, an energy balance of the entire measuring system is made using beech wood as a fuel with known calorific value (~ 18.000 kJ/kg), aiming at a determination of system specific parameters and suitable settings for the test method.
The motivation for the development of such a measuring system originates from the Austrian ordinance on landfills from 1996. In this regulation, a maximum threshold value of 6.000 kJ/kg d.m. is set for the calorific value of residual waste and therefore contribute to the reduction of climate-relevant gases, particularly of CH4.
Sample treatment and in particular the sample size are problematic due to the heterogeneous composition and the high share of inert substance of waste materials. The enhancement of the sample quantity up to approximately 5 - 10 kg, instead of the 1-g-samples in the usual bomb calorimeter method, allows for the inhomogeneity of waste and makes the sample representative.
For the determination of the calorific value a solid fuel boiler (with a capacity of 75 l) is used combined with a downstream flue gas condenser (the condensate is collected).
All measurements are carried out using beech split logs with known calorific value and water content as a reference.
The flue gas temperatures and the cooling water temperatures are measured in different places of the system and logged electronically.
An energy balance over the entire system enables to compare the resulting calorific value with the energy content of the fuel sample used (beech wood).
The main part of the energy is the heat quantity, that is dissipated by the cooling water. The other parts of the balance, which represent the losses concerning this test arrangement, should be quantified (flue gas losses because of incomplete combustion, radiation losses etc...). In order to quantify the losses due to incomplete combustion in the energy balance, the flue gas composition is measured. Heat losses due to radiation are measured and included as well.
With this systematic approach losses (concerning this test arrangement) could be quantified and continuative test arrangements were designed to remedy the still existing deficiencies.
