dc.description.abstract
This thesis focuses on the study of coding sequences in the context of ergodic theory, geometry, number theory and topology.
Let C be a compact monothetic group with generator g in C and let M be a subset of C. The coding sequence of M is, by definition, the binary biinfinite sequence which is 1 at the n-th position if ng in M and 0 otherwise. Coding sequences provide a connection between ergodic group rotations and symbolic dynamics. If M is a continuity set, i.e. if its topological boundary has Haar measure 0, the coding sequence of M is called Hartman sequence.
One central part of this work is devoted to the study of the combinatorial structure of Hartman sequences. In particular, the subword complexity P(n,H) of Hartman sequences H is analyzed. It counts the number of distinct words of length n occurring in H.
General bounds are discussed. Moreover a method is introduced which yields asymptotic formulas for the complexity function in special geometric situations. This method allows to deduce a connection between the subword complexity and the theory of convex geometry.
A second central part of this thesis deals with the characterization of subgroups of locally compact abelian (LCA) groups. One result of this part states that for every subgroup S of a metrizable LCA group G there exists a sequence x_n of characters in the dual group of G such that x_n g converges to 0 if and only if g is an element of S.
