Hecht, C. (2001).

Due to capillar rising moisture, a destruction of walls is possible. Therefore, specific procedures are needed for a long-term retrofitting of these buildings. This dissertation analyzes two methods which can be used individually in case of minor damages but are also highly effective when combined. At first the capillary moisture movement has to be stopped on the wall. This can be achieved with a subsequent moisture barrier by paraffin injection. These capillaries are blocked up and respectively hydrophobed because of this procedure. The used paraffin and the wall characteristics after injection are described - for example, thermal and hygrical characteristics, such as thermal conductivity, the water absorption coefficient and the water wapour transmission coefficient. Furthermore, mechanical features, such as flexural and compressive strength before and after the injection are discussed. The evidence of effectiveness of paraffin in an horizontal moisture barrier is shown on the basis of a developed method for injection materials. It is necessary to heat up the wall that will be injected. Therefore mathematical techniques are used. The remaining moisture above the horizontal barrier is the reason for moisture and salt conducted walls. Because of the moisture diffusion, the salts could be crystallized on the surface of these walls. The visible surface will not be destroyed optically and mechanically because of significant procedures. At the moment special renovation render systems are employed. The use of plates made of calcium silicate in buildings for inside thermal insulation is well-known. The developed renovation plate (salt plate) is based on calcium silicate and signifies an alternative to renovation render systems. These plates are an extension of the thermal insulation to the renovation of moisture and salt destroyed wall surfaces. Different salt load tests were carried out. The main values for building physical simulation are measured and validated for the developed product. In addition, a crucial part is the observation of the contact between the renovation plate and the wall in order to guarantee the function of the system. The dissertation also represents procedures of the use of paraffin as part of a vertical protection system on walls.
