Noé-Nordberg, F. (2020).

Although basic project management methods have been standardised for decades and were applied and refined throughout countless projects, we repeatedly see major projects fail spectacularly. Numerous scientific publications address this paradox, predominantly highlighting the correlation between project success versus structural and external factors. However, there is little emphasis on the effectiveness of primary project management methods, which have been standardized, and repeatedly recommended to be implemented as processes in major projects, by leading organizations. The research in this dissertation is focused on bridging this gap of knowledge. The aim of the dissertation is the empirical investigation of the relationship between the success of large-scale projects with physical delivery and implementation factors, essentially processually implemented methods, during the execution phase. This dissertation has been arranged to provide a structured view on the information presented. The theoretical part of this dissertation focusses on project management basics, the problem definition, the state of knowledge and the research methodology applied, followed by the analysis of the data, carried out with a focus on project success and its relation to the quality of project goals, to structural and to external factors, and, in particular, to implementation factors. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were taken in a triangulation: in the quantitative part, data from 49 large-scale projects was obtained, while two large-scale projects were examined as case studies in depth in the qualitative research. The result shows a positive relationship between project success and implementation factors, with the methods project control, cost control, risk management and stakeholder management most strongly correlating with the success of major projects. Knowledge Management positively correlates with the quality of the final product, whereas the action tracking process supports a smooth start-up process. In terms of the strong correlation between project success and the quality of project goals, as well as between project success and structural factors, the results of other researchers were confirmed. The frequently described correlation of external factors and the success of large projects did not show in the examined projects. From the findings, companies are recommended to use a processual model for the systemic anchoring of project management methods in their organisation, and the development of the competence-pool accordingly.
