Ackermann, C. (2022).

The increasing scarcity of resources and the effects of climate change demanda higher degree of sustainability in the way our society and economy operates. The building industry contributes significantly to the problem and at the same time has the potential to prevent further consequences. For this to happen, the linear planning structure of the construction industry must be replaced with life- cycle oriented planning. In this thesis, using the example of the modernization of a shipyard area, the approach with which circular planning can be implemented is demonstrated. An investigation of the methods of lifecycle oriented planning leads to an individual evaluation of the meaningfulness of certain measures for the structural design of a new shipyard hall. Resource-efficient construction and recyclable design have the greatest potential for engineering structures of this type. In addition, a comprehensive analysis of the site and existing buildings provides information about the functional requirements of the project. In the final step, a supporting structure is designed through an experimental and comparative preliminary design phase. In the structural design, the demands of architecture and engineering are in harmony with the sustainability demands of the circular economy. The purpose of the exemplary presentation of the design is to promote the interest of all participating planning parties in life-cycle oriented,resource-efficient architecture.
