Girsch, A. (2019).

The condition of the educational system as well as its development and innovations are currently a topic with considerably public interest. At the moment education systems in Germany and Austria are in a state of flux and undergo many changes. Through different political reformations and the development of new schooling concepts the importance of architecture increases in this sector. Knowledge and conclusions of educational science and theories of learning behavior influence the design and planning of school buildings. This thesis addresses the current developments and trends concerning the planning of school buildings in Vienna and Munich. New school concepts were introduced the Viennese Campus-model and the Munich ‚Learning house‘ concept which will be compared to each other in this thesis. At first the current education systems of Austria and Germany are described and the two concepts will be explained. Subsequently general requirements for a modern comprehensive school are depicted. In the course of this, examples of schools are analyzed, which fulfill the above mentioned criteria of these concepts. At last the two concepts are compared with each other and a draft is presented which would fit the needs of a comprehensive school following one of these concepts.
