The Torque Game Builder engine is a widely used 2D game engine suitable for rapid prototyping. To make it usable for the creation of music-based games, the engine had to be extended in two ways. First, the lacking game controller support in the Mac OS X version was improved by introducing support for game controllers with the help of Apple's IOKit framework. Force Feedback support was also enabled through the Force Feedback Framework. Second, Torque's build-in sound library, OpenAL, was subsituted with FMOD Ex, a sound library much more suited for a 2D enviroment. The thesis also deals with the theoretical foundations of music-based games, providing an overview over the history of sound in video games, as well as giving an introduction to digital sounds and methods of playback and storage. Several classifications schemes for audio in games are also presented.
