Kainz, A. (2010).
The Institute for Structural Engineering at Vienna University of Technology has developed a new, purpose- designed floor system in response to the increasing use of building services in precast structures. For this floor system, the installation conduits are laid in the load bearing structure. In this way, the structural height required for accommodating the installation conduits can be used for the load bearing structure. Furthermore, the span can be increased and the total height of the floor can be reduced.
The conduits for ventilation, air- conditioning, building services and information lines are accommodated by breaking down the load bearing structure into a thin, space-enclosing reinforced-concrete slab on the underside of the floor and truss-type reinforced-concrete ribs on the upper side of the floor. The conduits are laid in the area of the generously spaced rib openings. False ceilings are laid onto the ribs to create a walk- on floor.
The thin reinforced- concrete slab on the underside of the floor has a thickness of 10 cm. This slab forms the spatial enclosure and provides the necessary fire protection. The truss- type ribs are mounted on the slab. The ribs consist of a continuous upper cord, with 10 to 15 cm height and a system of compression and tie bars that form the openings for the installation conduits. The truss- type load bearing structure allows approx. 35% of the exposed area of the ribs to be used for conduit routing. A floor substructure is installed in the area of the continuous upper chord for the execution of the upper spatial enclosure.
Cover panels for the false ceilings or a conventional floor can be installed on top of this enclosure. The floor systems can also be mixed to provide permanent accessibility to the installation space.
