Abstract:
The first important steps in making a realistic prediction of the power requirement for high-speed marine vehicles is the capture and the analysis of decisive parameters. On the one hand these are the geometric dimensions of the boat, which include characterisitc values like the draft, the displacement and the center of gravity. On the other hand modifications, which are performed by the owner and which have an influence on the hydrostatic and the hydrodynamic of the ship, must also be integrated. Nowadays the simulation of different loadings can be done fast and easily by the use of efficient CAD-software. The Accuracy of the calculation of the resistance of planing hulls is based on the precise research of the the mentioned data and on the reliability of the used evaluation method. Because marine fouling on the hull and on the propellers changes the performance of the boat, it also has to be included in the calculation. The Means of propulsion with its specific mode of action and feature of performance has to be captured and analysed in parallel. Particularly the engine with its rating and the propeller have the most influence on the efficiency of a high-speed marine vehicles. A comparsion of the results of two calculation methodes (the use of standard series by Müller-Graf and the hull performance prediction method published by Savitsky) with full-scale speed trials leads to a logic conclusion - in the case of hulls operating at normal speeds the procedure by Müller-Graf is a good approximation - at higher planing speeds the method of Savitsky is the better solution. With the objective of increasing the speed of the yacht all further calculations will be based on Savitsky. Because the complexity of reducing the hull resistance of boats, which are already built, is to high and other appropriate actions have to be found. The use of trim tabs or interceptors will make a small contribution for increasing the speed. An improvement of the propeller efficiency by the application of an foul release coating on the propellers maintains a constant output. At least a correct and comprehensive propeller design induces more power - the maximum speed will rise about 15% and also the planing condition will be reached earlier. To ensure a lasting operation of the propulsion system and to minimize the risk of a failure of the struts and the rudder it is absolute necessary to stop the advanced galvanic corrosion of these parts. Fitting a Galvanic isolator or an isolation transformer and installing sacrificial anodes will take corrective action.
