Abstract:

This master thesis deals with the development and construction of a new concept for a sandbox of the sanding unit of a brake system. It is based on the complex geometry of a specific sandbox, produced by Knorr-Bremse for Honolulu Rail Transit in Honolulu, Hawaii. The sandbox is called "HONOLULU" and consists of a welded sheet-metal construction. This new development had two types of goals: three short-term and three long-term goals. The main focus was on reducing costs. Two innovative sandboxes were modelled for the optimization: ALBI and COLI. The new concepts not only had to achieve these goals, but also had to include all technical data and environmental conditions of the Honolulu sandbox. The geometry was not allowed to change. All three sandboxes should contain the same amount of sand. The innovative part in the first sandbox ALBI is located on the body. This consists of an angle profile construction. The angle profiles were welded together to form the support structure of the sandbox. In order to guarantee the sealing of the sandbox, sheet metal plates were riveted to the angle profile construction. The second sandbox COLI was based on the structural engineering concept, in particular skeleton construction. From this concept, the scaffolding was built, which acts as a supporting structure for the entire sandbox. The body is a light construction of three sheet-metal plates riveted together. The fixing of the body to the scaffolding was also made by rivets. The strength analyses shall be defined as modal analysis according to IEC 61373:2010 Railway applications - Rolling stock equipment Shock and vibration tests. Thanks to its light and simple construction the sandbox COLI achieved five of the six goals presented. However, it is not possible to achieve a standardized construction using the structural engineering concept, which COLI is based on, at the present time. Therefore, the project was stopped by the company.
