Abstract:

The number of internet platforms which allow their users to search for their pictures according to the location where the picture was taken is constantly increasing. However, with this kind of search users can only determine where a picture was taken, but have no possibility to directly search for objects on the photos. In order to eliminate this limitation, this thesis analyses in how far a picture´s field of view can be used in order to identify an object depicted on a photo. Therefore FoVA - the Field of View Analyzer - was developed. FoVA allows searching for the location where the picture was taken and also utilizes the field of view of a picture in order to identify the depicted objects. A prerequisite for FoFA is, that the location where the picture was taken and the direction of photographing have already been recorded and linked. The linking of these two sets of data, also called geo-referencing, is mainly done manually and therefore quite time intensive. This thesis also examines in how far this process can be automated and which technical conditions have to be fulfilled to be able to do so. For this reason, the application GPSTool was developed which enables users to utilize their PDA to record pictures including geodata in a simple way.
