Our society is going through a worldwide reorientation. The latest findings of environmental research as well as the current health and economic crises are pushing people to change their way of thinking. On the one hand, there are constantly rising raw material and energy prices. The human is being forced to find alternative but above all renewable raw materials and energy sources. Accordingly, technology is undergoing a rapid development with the aim of efficiently utilizing new raw materials and energy sources. On the other hand, the changes in the environment can no longer be ignored. The consequences of our anthropogenic actions are nowadays reported daily through the media. Above all, the global warming is gaining the most attention. Among other things, the are the decisive changes in fauna and flora which are related to it. In this context, the extinction of various animal and plant species is threatened, which means that a decline in biodiversity can hardly be avoided. And regarding this, also the danger of the own human health becomes slowly the main topic of any conversation. This is mainly caused by the release of pollutants into the environment. With the help of research, attention is being drawn to substances that are hazardous to health. In general, there is an awareness of the need to act in an environmentally friendly manner. In the building industry terms such as build-ing biology and building ecology are increasingly gaining in importance. Forward-looking planners want to create a healthy built environment. With the increasing importance of sustainability, the terminology has also been narrowed down more precisely, especially in the course of the last decades. Sustain-ability can be divided into the three dimensions of ecology, economy and the socio-cultural aspect. In order to build sustainably, all three dimensions must be considered in the planning.Sustainable building is currently also referred to as "green building" and, in the most current cases, it can also be designated as "blue building". The colour assignment is due to the colours associated with the earth. The goal of sustainable construction is not only to avoid building materials or building pro-cesses that are hazardous to health, but above all to think in terms of the future. Not only the effects of the building process on the present, but also those of the future are dealt with. In the construction and building sector, however, a sustainable approach proves to be very complex. There is an unmanageable amount of building products, which are provided with labels. And these labels are supposed to emphasize the sustainable characteristics of a product. There is a large number of quality symbols, all of which are awarded according to different criteria. In many cases, it is not easy to keep an overview. For this reason, there is now a wide range of tools for implementing sustainable construction. To differentiate between environmentally harmful and healthy building materials or products, collected balance data values in building material tables, software programs and databases can be used. Countryspecific guidelines can facilitate the approach to sustainable building design. Finally, assessment methods serve as orientation and as a source of information regarding possible environmental impacts.Evaluation methods exist in many different forms. They can be roughly divided into qualitative and quantitative methods. In addition, an assessment method can focus on only selected categories of the three dimensions of sustainability, depending on the interests of the developers. A well-tried method is the life cycle assessment. The focus of this method is on the ecological pillar of sustainability. The values determined via a life cycle assessment serve as balance sheet data values in the already mentioned tools above. The data evaluated via a selected assessment method are collected in life cycle balance databases. In the further course, these data collections are used in planning tools. Finally, the development of a certification system is required for the award of quality labels. Selected life cycle balance databases and planning tools are used for this purpose. Depending on the interests of the developer, seals of approval for the assessment of the respective sustainability can be awarded to building materials, building products, buildings, but also to certain activities or events. Accordingly, the different certification systems pursue different goals. It is therefore difficult to compare, for example building products that have been awarded different quality or test seals. Basically, a distinction is made between ecolabels, which assess the quality of an evaluation object, and environmental product declarations, which disclose the quantity of environmental impacts. In some cases, such as for the assessment of a building, the second variant is recommended. This allows building certification systems to consider the totality of a building over its entire life cycle and to tailor their assessment. The large number of evaluation methods, databases and quality seals are meant to support sustainable building. Sustainable building has its first beginnings in the Middle Ages, so that according to the forestry principle, only as much wood may be felled as it can also grow back, but the urgency for change seems to have reached the majority of the population only in the recent decades. The consciousness of the people has changed strongly to the positive. However, the incomplete knowledge about the topic is still considered as an obstacle in the implementation. Therefore, an efficient dissemination of knowledge is currently being carried out by research institutes, companies, private persons as well as politicians. The main focus lies on the standardization of assessment methods, for example, in order to ensure clarity among building products. Committed building participants are already striving for a building standard that goes beyond the requirements stipulated in the legislation. All these and other similar facts point to an upcoming revolutionary change in the building industry.
