In this thesis we investigate the transmission through simple interferometers with an emphasis on two specific topics. We first focus on the occurrence of so-called exceptional-points and show how their chiral and highly sensitive behavior can be observed in ring cavities. Secondly, we solve the inverse scattering problem to reconstruct a potential inside a one-dimensional scattering system and compare different techniques in terms of their accuracy of the potential reconstruction.
