Nowadays dynamical problems in structural engineering arise more often because of the use of high strength materials and complex computational simulations. For example high rise buildings, bridges and footbridges, pylons and chimneys, the tendency to more and more slender constructions can't be overlooked. This tendency is often forced by architects and the wishes of building owners. These slender structures common reach the serviceability limit states, like excessive accelerations or displacements of floors or footbridges, before reaching the ultimate limit states. Beside these effects, which delimitate the use of constructions or even make it impossible to use them there of course can arise problems with the loading capacity. For example, problems like the resonance effect, parametric resonance or wind induced vibrations should be mentioned at this point. If these problems are not considered in static and dynamic calculations and no measures are taken against them, the worst case, a collapse of the structure, is possible. One of these effective measures against dynamical problems of constructions is the application of tuned liquid column dampers. These are tube constructions with U- or V-shape in which a liquid with an initial deflection is moving towards the vibration of the structure.
With different closures at the ends of the tubes the vibration behavior of the liquid can be strongly affected because of the embedded air volume which operates as an air spring. The damper must be tuned exactly to the properties of the structure according to modified tuning criterions derived in this paper. They are similar to the criterions derived from Den Hartog for the two degrees of freedom system. Due to the moving liquid in the exactly tuned dampers a great part of the kinetic energy which effects the construction is dissipated by the tuned liquid column dampers. Thus a minimization of the dynamically amplitudes of the construction as well as the resulting stresses can be achieved.
Purpose of the present thesis is the investigation of tuned liquid column dampers for bridge constructions with vertical dynamic excitation. The equations of motion for the moving fluid in the shifted reference system are derived analytically as well as the corresponding forces and moments. Different cases for the filling of the dampers, which lead to different stiffnesses of the air springs and hence to different natural frequencies, are worked out and compared. Furthermore the formulas of the corresponding natural frequencies are presented. To applicate the tuning criterions of Den Hartog for the single mass-tuned liquid column damper-system modified tuning criterions are derived. With these easy to use formulas an appropriate tool for tuning the liquid column dampers can be given. Furthermore the phenomenon of parametric resonance is investigated and again an easy to use formula can be derived to avoid this negative effect. Beside the analytically calculations for the tuned liquid column dampers large scale tests are performed. For this purpose a steel bridge with a span of 10,0 m with the standard ballast bed of the Austrian Railway Association was constructed. For the dynamical erection two vibration generators, which have been especially constructed for the presented tests, are used. Two test series are considered as follows: series 1 with the test bridge without the ballast bed an two exactly tuned dampers and series 2 with the test bridge with ballast bed and again two exactly tuned dampers. As material for the dampers for the test series 1 PE-HD water tubes are used. For the second series one of the dampers again is made of PE-HD, the second one is made of Plexiglas to visualize the streaming and sloshing of the liquid in the tubes. For the endings of the tubes a special piston construction was developed to make the length of the air spring variable. Furthermore, comperative numerical studies are worked out under consideration of all nonlinearities of the dampers. These numerical calculations can verify the measured results of the tests.
Numerical results as well as the measured results can show the high effectiveness of the tuned liquid column dampers. Thereby a reduction of the dynamically amplitudes of 73% can be reached with a mass ratio (liquid mass to modal bridge mass) of merely 1%. Beside the demonstration of the effectiveness of the dampers the analytically derivations and their linearizations can be verified with the comparison of the measured results achieved by the large scale tests and the numerically investigations. The application of tuned liquid column dampers against vertical bridge vibrations is an effective, easy to tune and economic measure.
